How to make Red lentils Dahl

Dal (also spelled dahl or daal) is a popular Indian dish that is made with lentils and a variety of spices. It is a delicious, satisfying, and nutritious meal that is perfect for a cold day.

To make red lentil dal, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 1 cup red lentils, rinsed and drained
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, with their juices
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Chopped fresh cilantro, for garnish
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the red lentils and water. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, for 15-20 minutes, or until the lentils are tender.

  2. In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

  3. Add the ginger, garlic, cumin, coriander, turmeric, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper to the saucepan and stir to combine. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the spices are fragrant.

  4. Add the cooked lentils and their cooking liquid to the saucepan, along with the diced tomatoes and their juices and the vegetable broth. Stir to combine, and bring the mixture to a boil.

  5. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 20-30 minutes, or until the dal is thick and flavorful.

  6. Stir in the lemon juice and garnish with fresh cilantro.

Serve the dal hot, with rice or naan bread on the side. Enjoy!
